REVIEW: “COMPLEX FLASHBACK” by TMSV

Sleeve Art and B-Side Label

PRF004 is the most recent vinyl offering from Dutch bass-master TMSV who has served up a wide selection of vibes for the heads on this release featuring two different dubstep tracks on different ends of the sonic spectrum, as well as tasty little digi-ragga banger.

The title track “Complex Flashback” is a rolling euphoric dubstep tune, characterized most by the call-and-response flute melody which runs over the the gently shifting bass. With that you combine record-scratch bass drops with tiny piano flourishes over a classic dubstep beat. Mix it all together and at the end you have a wild trip of a title track.

First up on the flip you’ve got the lurching “Leder Verder”, where the distorted off-beat stabs and bubbling arcade squelches overlay tight drumwork and a menacing 808-bass kick. The second half of this track is really where it shines when the dissonant, dungeon-synth-esque melody is brought in and the elements all burst together. This track wouldn’t be out of place in a grime set, or in roots-oriented dubstep set either. While I’ve heard that this particular track has been floating around for a while, I hadn’t heard it till I got this record. At this point, I can’t say that I’m going to miss it in the event if hear it played in the future. The stabs on this one are in my brain and at the thought of hearing it played live I can already feel my screwface coming on and my hands contorting into gunfingers.

The second track on the flip is “Stopper”; a melodic stepper of a tune featuring ragga vocal samples and some serious groove. If you know anything about my personal preferences then you know that I’m a sucker for any tunes with chatting on top and this one crushes it a shifting, organic bassline and the massive bursts of energy that come across the speakers when the vocals come in. This track is admittedly not 140 BPM and may not be what people are looking for if they wanted three straight tracks of dubstep on a vinyl release. I don’t share that opinion. This is my favorite track of the release. Although I expect I won’t be using it in as many conventional deep dubstep sets, this track is easily the one that I know would pull me from the back of the dancehall and into a packed crowd within seconds of the bass drop. The fact that I’m going to be able to incorporate the track itself into reggae and dancehall sets in the future is great too.
